Concentric Circles

One circle parallel to the horizon, one circle parallel the contour of the land.

manuel ocampo

I have been looking at painters a lot more recently while on the vague grad school search, and while on a vacation between jobs during which i have lots of time to paint. also, uncg hosted a painting conference this weekend which made me miss being in the academic setting, though some of the conversations were frustrating/made my my head spin/were not interesting. i am always trying to situate myself in terms of an art historical map or timeline. anyway, i currently dig manuel ocampo.
his Dept. Of Avant-Garde Clichés, 2007.

gordon cheung

I found this guy in i think artnews; I was reading magazines the other day. He makes paintings with stock market numbers and graphs and acrylic spray. Interestingly, some of the animal images are reminiscent of Walton Creel's made with a .22, several posts back. i dig "Wilderness of Mirrors."

calArts

Finally, I am posting some images from my trip to calArts in Valencia, California (land of much ethnic food and many olive trees) to visit Travis prior to our return drive to Greensboro in December 2008.

Travis in his calArts studio holding up one of his prints.

Travis' show in the building at calArts: silkscreens of an image he bought from a website where you can buy targets for shooting practice. He had a narrative with the silkscreens which he wrote in cursive handwriting on the prints.

A close-up of the silkscreens.

Travis eating a mango smoothie and donuts outside the calArts building with the view from the balcony reflected in the window.

The basement of the calArts building with decades of institution-supported graffiti.

New Tool: .22

I read about this guy, Walton Creel, in Art Papers. He uses a .22 to make marks into painted aluminum, creating images of commonly hunted animals. http://www.waltcreel.com/
